City League Division 4

Wednesday 10th July

Blofield B Away

With captain, Nick missing the first of his 2 matches, we travelled to Blofield to take on their B team, we had lost a close encounter last time. This would be tough as we had a rare match on grass. Quentin came in for his debut.

Peter and Quentin made a bad start, both suffering bad falls, it was like playing at Wimbledon. A change of court did the trick and our pair made a bright opening, taking an early lead. It was a good match, but our pair kept their lead throughout. 9-6 and our opponents battled to hold to make the final score 9-7.

Next door, I started brightly with a good service game, but noce again we soon found ourselves behind at 3-1. The next four games were halved, but we came back to draw level at 6-6. A good solid 3 games gave us a tight 8-7 lead but we were unable to clinch the win, drawing 8-8.

With a slender 2 game lead at the midpoint, we went out looking for our first win of the season.

Mary and I made our traditional slow start going 3-1 down, worse was to follow as we found ourselves 7-1 behind. However there was good news next door, as Peter and Quentin lead 6-2. It was tight.

Mary and I raised our game and started a fight back, I held serve and we had a few chances but we trailed 10-2. we knew we had to do better and battled hard to win 2 of our last 4 games,a 4-12 defeat was the best we could do.

Next door, the home team pair found their form and hit back to level the rubber, before racing away to a 10-6 victory.

A frustrating but enjoyable match on some good grass courts. In truth, we didn’;t really lose this match, our opponents simply raised their levels. We have one difficult home match, against Bostons B to come then 4 games against the bottom 2. We can still stay up, this was an improved display.
