So back to Oriel for the annual tournament. Last year had not gone well, but blue skies greeted us as we arrived. There was one problem, a severe shortage of referees, through no fault of anyone, it was just one of those things. There were no ladies competitions but a full programme of boys section starting from under 6s to 16.

I was on the under 8 section. There were 3 groups of 8, meaning 28 matches per group with just 3 refs. It was tough in the heat, but everything went well. I had a good group with a high standard. A real battle was emerging at the top, Thetford, Waveney, Kirkley & Pakefield and Beccles lead the way, with Long Stratton in pursuit. For once the two host sides found it hard going as did old favourite Old Catton. The Cats split the Rangers sides at the bottom. Thetford, Waveney and K&P made the quarter finals.

By a quirk of fate Waveney and K&P met in the knockouts. Hardly ideal, Waveney came through. Thetford progressed as did a strong Horsford side, one of the favourites. I had the tie of the round as hosts Rangers took on a powerful Dersingham side. It was a tight match no goals were scored. The Ipswich team won 4-2 on pens.

Two good semis were played. Thetford beat Waveney and Dersingham beat Horsford in a game that could have gone either way.

Both teams looked tired in an entertaining final. A stunning strike gave Dersingham the lead and the trophy. A wonderful trouble free day with some good football played

Gorleston Rangers Tournament

Sunday 21 July

Ladies

Back to Oriel for the second day of the Gorleston Rangers tournament. This time the ladies took centre stage. Lowestoft had dropped out leaving one team short in group B. So there five teams played 10 minutes rather then eight, my pitch had six teams. Many players from yesterday were back. Waveney and Rangers. Thorpe, Bungay, Costessy and Freethorpe were the other clubs involved. Rangers started as favourites to add to yesterday’s title.

On my pitch, they started brightly, Thorpe looked strong as did Costessy. Freethorpe played well at time, Bungay also caught the eye. The standard was very high and there were many entertaining matches. The top four from each group went through. The sporting Waveney and Freethorpe missed out from mine and Thorpe B from next door.

Disaster had struck Rangers, when one of their players had to go to hospital after a fall caused a wrist injury. They had to play with just 4 players. Bungay took full advantage. Rangers battled bravely and defended stoutly, but once the Black Dogs had scored it was all over. Bungay won 3-0. The next match was closer as Costessy continued then fine form with a good win over Freethorpe. There was drama on the other pitch in the game of the day. Thorpe and Waveney drew and a dramatic penalty shoot out took place. Both sides struggled to score, but Thorpe came through on sudden death. Rangers had no problems beating Bungay.

Onto the semi finals. The two Norwich sides met, Thorpe and Costessy. An excellent match so Thorpe take a 2-0 lead, but Costessy pulled a goal back. Thorpe hung on for a 2-1 win. Next door Rangers beat Bungay 2-0.

The final was a good game and advert for women’s football. Against the run of play, Thorpe took the lead. Rangers battled back and equalised in the 2nd half. Extra time so no more goals, so a penalty shoot out would decided the title. And what a shoot out it was. The keepers had no chances as the first 5 penalties were scored. An excellent save, saw Thorpe edge ahead for 3-2. They scored for 4-2. Another fine save sealed the win.

So another good two days came to a fitting end. Can’t wait till next year.

Gorleston Rangers Tournament 2013

Saturday 20th July

Under 16 girls

With the summer heat wave in full swing, Gorleston Rangers held their annual tournament. Any concerns about the weather were soon forgotten as fret flew in from the sea, making it a slightly cold day, better for football however.

Last year the under 15’s girls were hit by call offs leaving just 4 side. This year was better although Bungay strangely failed to arrive leaving just 5 teams.

Gorleston Rangers started off as favourites, their Belles side made a good start. But then came the first upset of the day. Taverham deservedly beat the Babes side. In truth there was little between the side and that standard was very high, every game was closely contested. Belles won 3 out of 4 games finishing top with 6 points. 1 point separated the next 3 sides. The babes missed out on the knockout stages, leaving 4 different clubs.

The first semi final saw Taverham face Waveney. This was a highly entertaining affair. Both sides played lovely passing football. Taverham just edged the match and reached the final. The Belles were hot favourites against a vert strong Firside team. Another good game followed. Firside’s keeper was a great form and kept the home side at bay. Firside came close to winning it in extra time, but the shot was cleared off the line. Penalties would decide it. Firside took an early lead, but the hosts clawed their way back into it. The keepers would decide the match. Firside missed but Belles scored to take their place in the final.

They made a bright start as Taverham were slow to find their feet. Rangers Belles took an early lead, then increased and the game looked over. Taverham had played well all afternoon, and finally scored near the end. It was too late and the home side hung on for their 2nd successive success.

A good day, with great football and sportsmanship from all 5 teams.

Saturday 8th September

Norfolk Girls League

Sprowston U 13’s v FC Bradwell

The miserable summer ended in traditional style, with the hottest day of the year, not ideal for the first game of the season. Defending champions, Sprowston were looking forward to moving up to 9 aside. But their title was under threat from two quarters, Hellesdon and today’s opponents Bradwell. The home side had made changes with key players missing and some new faces. Bradwell had their share with a number of Gorleston Rangers players joining their ranks.

The home side started slowly and Bradwell made a shock opening after just 1 minute taking the lead with a well taken goal. The home side were shaken and hit back. They thought they had equalised but the linesman’s flag changed everything. The forward who scored was just in front of the ball. Bradwell were the better side at this stage and went 2-0 up.

Sprowston were not used to being behind, but had strong spirit. Gradually they came back into the game and pulled a goal back, they were level by half time.

The heat took it’s toll after the break and the younger Bradwell girls started to struggle. Sprowston were playing well and on top by this stage. They took the lead and there was only one team in it from now on. Bradwell were wilting and conceded 3 more goals to give the hosts a good 6-2 win. Bradwell were pleased with their start and will improve.

Gorleston Rangers Tournament

Sunday 16 June

Girls Under 15’s

After the problems of Saturday, we were hoping for a better day, certainly the weather was better, if rather hot. Almost immediately there were problems. North Walsham had pulled out, they had given warning of this in advance. Only 2 teams had registered, Rangers were late but only had 2 teams instead of 3. We were back to just 4 teams, we decided that each team should play each other twice.

The two rangers teams were joined by Bungay Town and Rickinghall Gunners, from Diss, they met in the 2nd game and the Gunners won an entertaining match 2-0. The Gunners followed this up with an impressive win of Rangers Gems. The next game saw another upset as a brave performance saw Bungay hold tournament favourites Jewel to a 0-0.

At the midpoint it was a 3 horse race. Rickinghall were well placed, equal with the Gems at the top, with Jewells 1 pts behind. But the heat was to take it’s toll as the two visiting teams had small squads.

Bungay ,lost 1 tight game to Rickinghall but fell apart with two heavy defeats to the Rangers sides. Rickinghall lost their last two games as well.

The semis saw the two Gorleston sides kept apart. Bungay started against the Jewels. The black dogs, looked down and out, but produced their best display of the day. The fought tenaciously and troubled the home side. Jewels took the lead, but back came Bungay in the match of the day, but as had happened all day, they created chances but failed to take them. Rangers made it 2-0 near the end.

Rickinghall had high hopes but were suffering. They never played the the football of earlier. The Gems took advantage winning 2-0.

The final was a drab affair as often happens with two teams from the same club. Both sides look tired and one goal settled it. an early first half goal giving the Jewels the title.

The standard was much higher today as all 4 teams played dome good football. Most pleasing was the great sportsmanship of all 4 teams. A great day and a good end to another excellent tournament. Here’s to next year.

Gorleston Rangers Tournament 2012

Saturday 16 June

Under 12 Girls

At long last the Gorleston Rangers tournament came round yet again, last year saw loads of shock results and surprises. What would this year bring?

Chaos was the word as the girls section nearly didn’t take place at all. The Norwich City trials clashed with the event. Previous finalist Scole and Sprowston were both missing and it was a struggle to raise enough teams. Attleborough and the home side pulled out, then Bungay failed to arrive. We were left with just 4 teams.

After a short delay, the two favourites to win the title started proceedings. Defending champions Witnesham defeat newcomers Hellesdon, in a tight match. Next up Bradwell Spain lead Bradwell Brazil 2-0 when the game came to a dramatic end. A Spain player fell awkwardly and needed hospital treatment. After an hour’s delay the game was abandoned. The following games were tight. Witnesham beat Spain but lost to Brazil, in the Shock of the day. Hellesdon picked up two draws again the Bradwell side.

Witnesham finished with the two Bradwell sides locked together in 2md and Hellesdon came last 2 points from the top.

Onto the semis and Bradwell Brazil beat Spain by the odd goal. Witnesham and Hellesdon provided the game of the day. Hellesdon raced into a two goal lead, but the Wasps scored just before the chance. An epic 2nd half followed and the scores were levelled with a minute to go. Witnesham thought they had won it when the keeper fumbled the ball but the full time whistle sounded and it was debatable whether the ball crossed the line. Extra time saw end to end football but no goals, it was down to penalties. The first 8 were scored, both keepers had to take theirs. Hellesdon had a slight advantage as they had out fielders in goal. Their keeper scored, but Witnesham’s was saved. Hellesdon had won 7-6.

The final never really got going Hellesdon scored twice as Bradwell somehow lost their good form. Both sides had chances but Hellesdon deserved the win. Bradwell’s keeper was outstanding, it was just game to many.

All in all some good football played and all the games were close. Bradwell really impressed. Let’s hope there is a tournament next year and Rangers still have a team.

Saturday 27th April

Norfolk Girls League Under 12’s

Sprowston 2-0 Attleborough

Attleborough have come a long way this season, in two senses of the word. New to the league they have grown and, at one point, were in 3rd place. Now they were in midtable and faced the daunting task of visiting the league champions. Sprowston have clinched the title last week at 2nd placed Hellesdon. Now they aimed to keep their 100% record for the second season running.

If the visitors were worried about this statistic, then it didn’t show. With the wind at their backs they pushed forward and had the home team on the back foot. It was an experimented line up for the hosts. They struggled against a hard tackling and strong away side. For once shots rained in the home goal. Some good stops by the new keeper kept the score level at half time.

Sprowston have made a habit of scoring goals in clusters this year and today was no exception. Soon after the restart, they scored twice after a good moves. The away team could’ve wilted, but they didn’t. They came back strongly. Both keepers made good saves but the game drifted on until the final whistle.

2-0 was just about a fair result, but Attleborough deserved a goal for their efforts. Sprowston have one match left, the cup final against Hellesdon. Watch out for Attleborough next season, they could do well.

Saturday 14th April

Norfolk Girl’s League Under 11 cup semi final

Sprowston 6-2 Fc Bradwell.

The sides met for the second time in two weeks. Sprowston had won fairly comfortably, but were wary of the visitors.

The match started in bright sunshine, with a cold wind blowing. It was a hectic start with both sides looking to attack. Despite the visitors bright start, Sprowston opened with a fine solo goal after a long run.

Bradwell must’ve feared the worse, but, unlike last time, when they conceded 3 goals in quick succession, they hit back themselves. A superb cross was met with a perfect volley and the keeper had no chance. The goal of the season so far.

Sprowston are a confident side and didn’t panic, they pressed forward looking for a 2nd. The away keeper was in fine form making some good stops, but Sprowston would not be denied, regaining the lead.

Back came the visitors and the home keeper was tested. There were chances are both ends before Sprowston scored a 3rd.

3-1 and the visitors looked dead, they started slowly and let in an unfortunate goal. The ball was rolling towards the goal. The keeper and and forward both tried to kick in, but caught each other and somehow the ball ended up in the net.

Bradwell’s heads didn’t drop and continued to push forward only to be denied by the keeper. Sprowston scored twice more for 6-1, a cruel scoreline and the game looked dead.

5 minutes from time, a long run resulted in Bradwell scoring their deserved 2nd. The game burst back into life and the visitors swarmed forward. For the first time this season the home side had been pressed back. They hung on till the final whistle.

A great match, two fine keepers, superb attacking forward from both sides and a sporting encounter on and off the field.

Norfolk Girls League Under 12

31st March

Sprowston v Bradwell

The end of the season approaches and Sprowston look set to win their second title. A good win the previous week, at local rivals Thorpe, meant 4 points from their last 3 games will make certain. With a visit to main rivals Hellesdon approaching, they faced their stiffest test so far at home to Bradwell. Apart from Sprowston, they were the only team to take a point off Hellesdon so far. They also had two close matches with the home side, last year. Sprowston struggling to a 2-1 win. Of course Bradwell were then Bohemians.

A strong cold blustery wind blew down the bone hard dry pitch, making life difficult for both sides. There was very little football played in a low key start. Bradwell had lifted the shackles off and had come here to attack, after the ultra negative tactics last season.

Midway through the half, the game burst into life. A good move saw Sprowston take the lead. The burst into life and scored 2 more in 5 minutes. Bradwell were on the ropes facing a barrage of great attacking football, but they fought hard and stemmed the tide, creating a few half chances.

The second half was more entertaining. Sprowston were on top form but couldn’t find a way passed the new visiting keeper. Finally they scored after another good move. Bradwell clung on and didn’t make the same mistake as in the first half. Sprowston had to work for their goals, but were too strong. They scored twice more for 6-0 and a fair reflection of the game. Bradwell had some chances and the home keeper made a string of good stops. Bradwell were not to be denied and scored from a breakaway. Sprowston retaliated with a 7th to wrap up a good win against a tough side.

A good sporting entertaining game, with both sides playing good football.

The title is close now. The next league game for Sprowston is away to Hellesdon. A defeat there will make the final round exciting. Sprowston are at home to Attleborough whilst Hellesdon go to Bradwell. But that will all be forgotten for a while. Sprowston face Bradwell next in the cup semi final.

Saturday 3rd March 2012

Norfolk Girls League Under 12’s

Sprowston 4v0 Gorleston Rangers

On murky morning, Sprowston were looking to continue their march towards a second consecutive title. They had been in good form with a series of comfortable victories, Gorleston Rangers were the latest to try their luck. However, for the second year running, they visited Sprowston with injury problems. At one stage they only had 6 girls but a 7th arrived.

The game started at a cracking pace. the home side looked very confident and sprayed the ball about. Rangers defended stoutly, they were no push overs. The visiting keeper was in top form, with a series of fine saves. But it wasn’t all one way traffic, as Rangers looked to push forward at every opportunity. They nearly took a shock lead, as a break resulted in a blistering shot, that was well held by the home keeper.

Halfway through the first half the deadlock was finally broken. A spell of Sprowston pressure ended up with home side taking the lead. Moments later saw the goal of the season at Sprowston. A quick fire series of short passes, stretched the away defence and a cool finish made it 2-0. Rangers hadn’t done much wrong to this point, but an error at the back made it 3 goals in a 5 minute spell.

There were no more goals up to the break, but there was another set back for Gorleston. Injury meant they had to restart with just 6 players, a repeat of last year. Inspired by their keeper, Rangers kept the home side at bay. The visitors made the odd break but found the home defence in a mean mood.

Rangers were back to 7 players and another fine cross saw Sprowston make it 4-0. The game started to die now and there were few chances at either end.

4-0 was probably a fair score, in a competitive but sporting encounter. Rangers had battled hard against an in form home team. Player of the match has to be the Rangers keeper.
