After a long day on Saturday, there were some tired limbs going into Sunday. There were more referees but still not quite enough.

I found myself with the under 9’s, there were 3 pitches with 8 teams in a group and 4 refs. Our rotation scheme didn’t work but at least we had some breaks.

Teams came from far and wide, Ipswich and Essex. It was good to see North Norfolk represented with Aylsham and Bacton, back after a long absence. The sloping pitches caused problems with teams playing one way. There were other problems as well. One team were accused of fielding over age players, another player had his shorts pulled down by another team and one team were guilty of poor behaviour resulting in me showing my first ever blue card.

Back to the football and there were some good sides. Ipswich looked strong as did Rangers and Loddon. Bohemians struggled as did Bacton. Aylsham were the favourites looking very impressive. It was good to see Caister back in their traditional orange and black.

I had to leave after the quarter finals. There was a delay to the start of these. For only the 2nd time in the tournament two teams finished level in the league. There had to be a decider, this time a penalty shoot out.

The quarter finals were tight. In my match Stanway lost by the only goal against Ipswich. A very close game this as the Essex side more than matched their opponents. Loddon edged out Ormesby in a tie that went to extra time. Aylsham put out Rangers. The other result is missing.

Wroxham v Chatham

Saturday saw my once a season treat to watch my beloved Chatham Town visit Wroxham. Things had changed since last year when Chatham were enjoying one of their best ever seasons, Wroxham were struggling to stay up. The roles were reversed, Chatham were just outside the relegation zone, whilst Wroxham were pressing for promotion.

The opening stages were rather forgettable as a midfield battle ensued. The visitors were playing well enough, but lacked a little confidence. It was the hosts that opened the scoring after the visiting defence gave the ball away inside the box.

The omens looked bad for the Chats, but they pushed forward and created a few half chances. The goal came after a scramble, the linesman flagged immediately to say that the ball had crossed the line. It was 1-1 and the game was coming to life just as the half time whistle blew.

It was a different story after the break as Chatham took control playing some lovely football. 3 world class saves kept Wroxham in the match and there only looked one winner. The missed chances were prove costly as lady luck intervened.

The officials had had an excellent game, but for once, the referee missed a shove on a Chatham defender. The Wroxham player was clean through and made no mistake. It was a cruel blow with 10 minutes left. Another break away made it 3-1 to the hosts. The game was over now, but Chatham hit make and scored only for a flag for offside to rules out the goal.

A great game, the only difference between the two teams was the league positions. Chatham played well but were a little short on confidence. Still they can take great heart from this display and should pick up the points needed to stay up, they need to be little more positive, especially up front.

Woodlands v Peterhouse

Woodlands were expecting stern test from strong opponents. Peterhouse had a good reputation. The game start evenly with both sides playing good football. Woodlandfs had a slight edge with a good short passing game and movement off the ball. They took the lead midway through the half with a fine strike. Peterhouse came back strongly and scored a deserved equaliser. The home side were not to be denied and retook the lead just before half time.

After the break, the visitors started to tire and the home side took control. The next goal was crucial and it was the home side that scored it for 3-1. A 4th goal soon followed. Peterhouse made changes and brought on their two girls. The girl in goal was outstanding and made some fine stops to keep the score to 4-1. A very enjoyable game played in an excellent spirit.
