Brook B at home
We had a difficult encounter to start our season. Brook B had finished 3rd just ahead of us, last season and we had won the home game. The game was in doubt after rain, but the clouds cleared to leave a fine evening. They were a stronger outfit from last year.
Mary and I made a slow start as I struggled for form and we trailed 4-0. I made a better start to the next 4 games holding serve. Our opponents were struggling now. A good match was developing and it was very even. But our poor start cost us as we went down 10-6
Next door Nick and Pete were in fine form, leading early on Their opponents didn’t give up and staged a late come back to draw 8-8. It was all to play for in the reverse rubbers.
Mary and I made a better start but still trailed. It was a good battle but the visitors held the upper hand but it was close. We were hoping for a come back, but our opponents took control in the gathering gloom to win 11-5.
Yet again Nick and Pete were involved in a close game, but couldn’t take the lead. The rubber ended 8-8.
So a disappointing start, but we had played one of the promotion contenders. We didn’t play that badly against strong opponents. An enjoyable match played in the right spirit.
